Steph feels deeply connected to the landscape of Scotland, and this is where she draws her inspiration. When creating in situ she allows a conversation between herself and the landscape and aims to draw the essence of what she feels, rather than a desire to replicate its physical likeness. Her work is characterised by a distinct use of line, negative space, and a rich colour palette.

Using her hands to smudge and smear materials enables her to connect further with the work she is making. She enjoys the sense of urgency and energy which is conveyed in the urgent mark making in her work. Negative space is used playfully to guide the viewers gaze and allow pockets to be obscured. Her favourite mediums are inks, pencils and wax pastels. Drawing from the natural world around her, Steph’s colour palette frequently looks autumnal. She extracts these colours from the Scottish landscape all year round.

She is a graduate in History of Art from the University of York and also from the Arts University Bournemouth, with additional qualifications in teaching. She is based in Scotland.
